Take Your Keys: Leaving your car running while unattended is illegal.

Auto theft is a crime of opportunity and most thieves look for an easy steal. Leaving your vehicle running unattended is like inviting thieves to hop in your car and take off. It may take you five minutes to grab a cup of coffee or use an ATM, but it only takes 3 seconds to steal a running vehicle.

Not only is it stupid to leave your car running unattended—it's illegal!* Avoid the ticket and help stop auto theft by turning off your engine, locking the doors, and taking your keys.

Speak up! If you see someone leave their car running at places like ATMs and convenience stores let them know they could get a ticket—or worse, have their car stolen.

* Pennsylvania Vehicle Code, Title 75, §3701: Unattended motor vehicle. (a) General rule-No person driving or in charge of a motor vehicle shall permit the vehicle to stand unattended without placing the gear shift lever in a position which under the circumstances impedes the movement of the vehicle, stopping the engine, locking the ignition in vehicles so equipped, removing the key from the ignition and, when standing upon any grade, turning the front wheels to the curb or side of the highway and effectively setting the brake.

Established by the General Assembly (Act 171 of 1994), the Authority exists "to establish, coordinate, and fund activities in (Pennsylvania) to prevent, combat, and reduce automobile theft..."

Our goal is to combat auto theft through tough laws, improved enforcement and administration, effective prosecution, and public education.

The Authority uses no tax dollars. Its funds are raised through annual assessments paid by nearly 400 auto insurance companies doing business in Pennsylvania. These funds facilitate a cooperative effort by the insurance industry, law enforcement agencies, and the citizens of the commonwealth.
